Garden patios add value and interest as well as much needed outdoor entertaining space to your home. They give you a great place to show off your outside gardening as well as keep your potted plants, flowers, and are even a place for you and your friends to sit and relax on a beautiful sunny day or cool summer evening. Novices have built their own garden patios that are beautiful, sturdy and very functional.
Tips
Make a list of several important items that need to be planned before getting underway with your patio garden plan. Any type of outdoor living area creates more space for entertaining and will ultimately increase the value of your home as well. There are several types of materials that can be used in creating garden patios like redwood or cedar decks or stone or concrete. Gravel is more commonly used for pathways or driveways rather and for patios or play areas.
The Planning Stage
Garden patios require plenty of pre-measuring of the are where the patio is going to be. Go with a size that is going to be reasonable and be large enough to make use of but not oversized. Also remember that rectangular designs tend to be much easier to carry out than curved designs, so if you are beginner, then rectangular is going to be the best way for you to go.
Now you want to dig out the area for the garden patios, typically to a depth of about 8”. To protect your home's foundation, use a level to make sure that the patio floor is running slightly downhill, away from the house. To be assured of the bricks looking like you had planned, lay them out beforehand without setting them. If you are completely happy with how the bricks look then you can pour the sand and set them permanently in place. To prevent the bricks from easily moving or becoming dislodged a basket weave pattern is recommended.
