One of the most important components of your aquarium is the type of marine lighting that you select. Many aquarium enthusiasts start off by using the recommended components that the pet store or aquarium supplier suggested. They do not know why certain reef lighting works better than others, or what type of coral that they have in their aquarium. While it is always wise to follow the recommendations of experts, you also must make sure that you have an understanding of why you need the certain equipment that you purchased. By taking the time to understand your aquarium and its reef lighting you will ensure the overall health of your marine life.
There are several different marine lighting selections that are available. One of the most popular is metal halide lighting. This type of method has been recommended for years by fish enthusiasts. The metal halide bulbs are the closest alternate to sunlight that have been manufactured. They contain the specific colors of the spectrum that encourage the process of photosynthesis in your corals. This process is necessary for your corals to grow and thrive which in turn creates a more normal and healthy environment for your fish. The entire cyclical nature of the process is very important to understand.
The other popular option for reef lighting is florescent light. Many aquarium enthusiasts use this type of lighting. These bulbs come in normal output and very high output depending upon the specific corals that you have in your tank. You will have to be well informed about your corals and your fish when dealing with this specific type of lighting. It will take some careful calculations to figure out the bulb wattage that is necessary for your tank. You will need to know how many gallons of water it holds and how deep the tank is.
It is of the utmost importance that you change your marine lighting bulbs on a regular basis as recommended by the manufacturer. Even before your light shows any signs of dying out, it will lose its efficiency. The spectral rays that are essential to the photosynthesis process will fade out leaving your corals in danger. You do not want to send a shock to your system and throw off its careful balance. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for bulb replacement and if you use your lights more commonly than the average, compensate for the additional time by replacing your bulb even sooner.
