Do plants use respiration to convert the glucose made in Photosynthesis into ATP?
I am aware that respiration continuously happens in plants and the rate of respiration is dependent on the limiting factors like light intensity. But do plants use this metabolic pathway to convert the carbohydrates made in photosynthesis to ATP for growth etc?
Yes, a portion of the total glucose molecules now in the form of starch (storage form of carbohydrates in plants) , which were previously produced from photosynthesis in plants will have to be converted by the cells to generate energy in the form of ATP, or Adenosine Triphosphate. This is accomplished by cellular respiration, wherein glucose molecules gets oxidized by the cells to form ATP molecules at the rate of : 1 glucose molecule: 36 net ATP molecules. These ATP molecules will then be used by the cells or the whole plant for growth, repair of damaged and dead tissues and other metabolic processes in order to maintain life of the organism/plant.
